Spanish Teachers

The  Immersion Program for Spanish teachers is specifically designed to help teachers at the secondary level in the United States, Canada and European countries improve and polish their

pronunciation, correct advanced level grammar errors and refresh their understanding of literature and culture.  This program will give teachers opportunities to create curriculum lessons that reflect the current reality of Latin American culture.  Our faculty

Obtain college credit in Hispanic literature

The three week course will include grammar study and  practice to help students improve their use of verb tenses, the subjunctive and correct syntax as well as other complex Spanish language structures.

Katelynn Jensen, a Spanish teacher from from Marquette, MI, shares her experience learning Spanish at Casa Xelaju.

It is well-known that after several years of not using an acquired second language in real-life situations, there is a gradual deterioration of pronunciation.  Our teachers will be working on phonics so that the students’ pronunciation more closely represents that of a native speaker.

Another aspect of the immersion program is the review of literature from Latin America that will include authors from Spanish speaking countries.

Here students will use literary analysis as a means to better understand the culture and linguistic structure of the stories they will be reading.

One part of this experience helps Spanish teachers create cultural activities to use in their classrooms to help students have realistic and interesting lessons while learning Spanish.

To achieve this goal, we have scheduled various workshops about curriculum development that will include cultural aspects not only of Guatemala, but other Spanish speaking countries as well. For more information about these activities, please refer to our cultural activities calendar.

The program consists of a total of 75 hours of instruction with a 3:1 ratio of students to teacher and daily social and cultural activities.

The cost is $1,750.00 which includes tuition, room and board with a local Guatemalan family (3 meals/day), a private room, weekend trips (including breakfast), excursions, all transportation during trips, entrance fees to parks and museums.

Prices are based on double occupancy in hotels during weekend trips. If you prefer to have a private room, please contact us.
