Effective Second Language Acquisition

Broklyn Park, MN. December 12, 2007.  Our director, Julio E. Batres, participated in the conference, “Effective Second Language Acquisition” presented by Dr. Stephen Krashen. Dr. Krashen is one of the most well-known socio-linguist in the world in the area of second language learning. During his presentation, he covered diverse topics regarding acquiring a second language. Among the main topics were: phonics versus whole language, seeking the role for grammar, the case against correction, the power of reading, and sheltered instruction.

Perhaps one of the main topics of his presentation was the issue dealing with comprehensible input in the second language acquisition. According to Krashen, students are able to master any story in another language when a language teacher presents the story to students with comprehensive input.
For our director, this was the second time that he has participated in Krashen’s seminar. According to Batres, ¨Listening to Dr. Krashen is a unique experience because he always comes with the most current and updated research in the development of learning a second language.¨

At the end of December, 2007, Casa Xelaju teachers will have the opportunity to learn about the key concepts when Batres gives a mini-presentation on Dr. Krashen’s seminar.
