School Sponsorship Program

The Proyecto La Pedrera began in 1995 with the creation of a scholarship program, supporting 13 children in the year of its inception. Monetary donations were solicited from sponsors to bring education to children of the La Pedrera community. That first year, the children were all enrolled in public schools, but when we speak of public schools in Guatemala, this does not mean free education. One must pay enrollment fees, school uniforms, and all educational materials, including textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and other necessities. With a scholarship, medical consultations and personal services for the benefit of the child are also covered.

To get a school sponsorship (scholarship) the first year, there was an exhaustive selection process because of the number of children in the community and the limited supply of funding.

Thankfully, the following year, we were able to enroll more children, and in some cases they were even able to attend quality private schools. This was decided by their particular sponsors who were willing to pay a little more each month to cover the minor extra costs of the monthly enrollment fee charged by the school.

In accord with the needs and the economic situation that the community lives with, it was decided to solicit from the sponsors the amount of money needed to cover all of the educational needs of the children. For that the following donation breakdown was established:
  • For children at the primary school, US$275 per year.
  • For children at the middle/high school school, US$395 per year.
  • For children at the vocational/professional school level, US440 per year.
It is also important to mention that the Project provides support for many families with children and youths. Through this effort together with the children we are able to give the opportunity to reclaim the right to an education that helps sostainable economic development and to protect their cultural traditions in general.

Today we can see that the education that we have achieved for the children has been very satisfying for them in being able to enroll in school and get an eduation.

This is the area that we need to focus on, since it is the area with the lowest percentage of children with sponsors to help with their education.

It is good to recognize that the boys, girls and youths in the program show capacity, creativity and aptitudes that can be exploited to a maximum to be able to later give support to their own community.
