| School Sponsorship Program |
|

|
This program began
in 1995 with the sponsorship of 13 children where an economic
donation was solicited from sponsors to bring education to children
of the community. The first year, the children were enrolled in
public schools, and when we speak of public schools in Guatemala,
it does not mean free. One must pay enrollment fees, school uniforms
and educational materials. With a sponsorship, medical consultations
and personal services for the benefit of the child are also covered.
To get sponsorship the first year, there was an exaustive selection
process because of the number of children in the community.
Thankfully, the following year, we were able to enroll more children,
and in some cases in private schools according
to the desires of their particular sponsors where a varying monthly
fee is also charged by the school and the sponsor pays a little
more each month to cover the extra costs. |
In accord with the needs and the economic situation that the community
lives with, it was decided to solicit from the sponsors the amount of
money needed to cover all of the educational needs of the children.
For that the following donation breakdown was established:
- For children at the primary schooll, US$250.00
per year.
- For children at the middle/high school school, US$360.00
per year.
- For children at the vocational/professional school
level, US400.00 per year.
That is how the Project has been able to bring educational
support to the children in the community, where the annual coverage
has been:
- In 1996, 50 children sponsored
- In 1997, 90 children sponsored
- In 1998, 52 children sponsored
- In 1999, 58 children sponsored
- In 2000, 44 children sponsored
- In 2001, 39 children sponsored
- In 2002, 35 children sponsored
- In 2003, 38 children sponsored
- In 2004, 33 children sponsored
- In 2005, 45 children sponsored
 |
It is also important to mention
that currently the Project covers a total of 55 benefiting families
with children and youths. Through this effort together with the
children we are able to give the opportunity to reclaim the right
to an education that helps sostainable economic development and
to protect their cultural traditions in general.
Today we can see that the education that we have achieved for the children has been very satisfying for them in being able to enroll in school and get an eduation.
This is the area that we need to focus on, since it is the area with the lowest percentage of children with sponsors to help with their education. |
It is good to recognize that the boys, girls
and youths in the program show capacity, creativity and aptitudes that
can be exploited to a maximum to be able to later give support to their
own community.
