La Pedrera Community

In 1994, after a two year investigative study by Casa Xelajú, La Pedrera Project was launched in an attempt to encourage the development of a self-supportive economy and culture in the communities of La Pedrera and Cantón Xetuj. These villages are located in the hills immediately south of Xela. Two socio-economic studies of the communities have been completed, the most recent being in April, 1998, which focused on identification and prioritization of the community's needs. The Project's objectives are based on the findings of this study. Our project is based on the philosophies of Unity in Diversity and community participation. We aim to give each student a chance to not only feel a sense of individualism, but also to participate and learn in a harmonious environment with other children and adults.

We are aided immensely by locals and foreigners who work in the project. Their knowledge and experience contributes new ideas and techniques for teaching the students of La Pedrera. With the vision of unity in this diverse culture, the community project facilitates relations between the community members (Cantón Xetuj and La Pedrera), the volunteers, and the people interested in supporting the programs of the project. The following identifies the philosophy of "Unity in Diversity", which is a part of the Mayan Vision. The concept speaks of interdependence, harmony, equilibrium and organization based on respect, honesty and humility between nature and humans. In addition to the maintainance of equality, it is necessary to value all of creation with admiration and respect. This philosophy, along with community participation, is the foundation for strengthening the community of La Pedrera.
