Educational Reinforcement Program
Many children in the project have
difficulty completing homework. They do not have access to a proper
work environment in their homes. Usually, their parents cannot help
because of their own illiteracy or because the child has surpassed
their education level. The Educational Reinforcement Program runs
during the afternoon at Casa Xelajú, providing a stable work
environment and supplemental help to reinforce the education that
the children receive in school. The focus of the Educational Reinforcement
program is to strengthen the children's understanding in areas such
as math, social and natural sciences, literacy, art and languages.
The Project has several Macintosh computers that are used to teach
basic computer skills, such as use of the mouse. We attempt to give
children adequate attention (our preferred student/teacher ratio
is 2:1); however, it is only possible with help from student volunteers.
Proyecto La Pedrera works to provide basic support services and
education to the communities of La Pedrera. Our continued success
and growth relies on volunteer power.

Social Education Program
This program arrose principally
to cover the educational needs of the children that do not have
sponsors and as a follow-up for the children that lost ther sponsors.
The program consists in bringing education, of varying levels,
providing enrollment fees, educational material and teaching different
abilities such as handicrafts, art, areas of reality as well as
in other areas as the needs arise. In the same manner, bringing
them the opportunity to receive an eduication to help them in
their future, this being an important aspect of society.
The most important thing in this program is the economic support
through socio-cultural activities, economic and material donations
that are received from people with interest in our program.
The Program in general covers many children. The number of children we serve changes each year depending on how many families want to participate and how many sponsors are involved. To see which children are involved with the program this year click here>. To see which children still need sponsors click here>. It
is here that we must focus attention because it is in this program
that we support the higher percentage of children.
It is interesting to see the important role that education plays
in the children, since they are the foundation for development
and to protect their culture. This makes us recognize that the
support given is accepted at 75% and with that we have diminished
illiteracy in the community and in the families served by the
Project.
